Dementia is a neurological disorder that can be caused by more than 80 distinct diseases, several of which share common histopathologic and clinical features, thus presenting a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. The authors discuss the role of positron emission tomography (PET) not only for preclinical and differential diagnoses but also for the evaluation of response to novel therapies that are currently in development.
