Abdominal nuclear medicine emergencies

Currently, abdominal emergency nuclear medicine includes GI bleeding scintigraphy, technetium-99m scanning for acute appendicitis, hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid scanning for acute cholecystitis, and renal scanning for acute collecting system obstruction. Nuclear imaging can play a complementary role to traditional radiologic imaging. The authors review the indications for, benefits of, and procedures for these nuclear scanning applications.
