BRACCO LEADERS ON THE HORIZON EDUCATIONAL GRANT: CT WINNER

Applied Radiology asked each of the two award winners to comment on his experience participating in the Bracco Leaders on the Horizon Resident Program.

Jim S. Wu, MD

Having the opportunity to participate in the BraccoLeaders on the Horizon research program has been an extremely enriching and enjoyable process. Often, as radiology residents, our time is consumed with learning the fundamentals of our field. Thus, we find it difficult to pursue areas of personal academic interest and to participate in research. However, research is instrumental in expanding our specialty. It is important that we as residents become involved in research as early in our careers as possible.

This program allows residents to experience the pains and joys of completing a research project, all in a truncated time period. I chose a topic of interest in CT, attended RSNA, wrote a paper, and saw it published, all in a seven-month time period. After undergoing the review process, I have a greater respect for academic radiology. It takes high-quality research to have work accepted for publication.

RSNA was a great experience. I attended several seminars and lectures from experts in the fields of emergency radiology and CT angiography. These talks, combined with the posters, provided me with a wealth of information for my topic and allowed me to see the quality of imaging being performed nationally and internationally. It was amazing and quite surprising to see so many radiologists in one building. For those of you attending RSNA next year, try to set an agenda at the beginning of each day so that you can best utilize the conference. It is truly a great experience.

By participating in this program, I have discovered how rewarding research can be, and I hope to pursue a career in academic radiology. I strongly recommend this program to all residents.
