"Physical science will not console me for the ignorance of
morality in the time of affliction." --Blaise Pascal
R ecently, I have been distressed by several experiences where
members of my family or relatives have been offered medical or
dental treatment that was unwarranted, unnecessary, or potentially
harmful. As I looked into these situations, I found that some are
based on ignorance on the part of the professional who proposed the
treatment, while others can only be motivated by avarice. I find
the latter particularly unconscionable. I suppose this problem has
always been with us, but is it becoming more commonplace?
In my many years as a choir member, I have listened to a great
many sermonssome great and others easily forgettable. The one
that I have always remembered was based on the theme "suppose
everyone did it." This thought has always remained with me and
often helps with difficult decisions. I wonder if some physicians
and dentists who practice poor medicine or who are motivated by
financial gain would bother to consider this thought when their own
family members require attention. It's a wonderful philosophy. I
wish everyone adopted it.
