Real-time ultrasound examination provides significant morphologic detail of the native kidneys without the nephrotoxicity of intravenous contrast. The recent advent of color and power Doppler imaging not only facilitates the pulse of Doppler examination but also provides superb visualization of the entire renal vascular tree.
