  • CT in pregnancy: Risks and benefits

Pregnant patients may experience nonobstetrical emergencies over the course of their pregnancy. Although CT imaging is effective for diagnosing several conditions, its use on pregnant women remains controversial. Not only is the pregnant mother vulnerable to ionizing radiation exposure but the developing fetus in utero has an increased risk of cancer when exposed doses as low as 10 mGy. The authors discuss the role of CT in diagnosing nonobstetrical emergency conditions in pregnancy, and the risks and benefits it poses to both mother and fetus.
