Abstract: Although it seems like only yesterday, it has actually been
twelve years since we acquired an editorially drained publication
called Applied Radiology. Dr. Byron G. Brogdon had already stepped
down as Editor-in-Chief, and the journal had wandered for almost
two years a ship without a rudder.
My first task as publisher was to right the ship and return the
journal to editorial stability and credibility a seemingly
insurmountable task. I took two aspirin and called Dr. Brogdon.
Without hesitation he said quietly, "Get Ted Keats."
Although it seems like only yesterday, it has actually been
twelve years since we acquired an editorially drained publication
called
Applied Radiology
. Dr. Byron G. Brogdon had already stepped down as Editor-in-Chief,
and the journal had wandered for almost two yearsa ship without a
rudder.
My first task as publisher was to right the ship and return the
journal to editorial stability and credibility a seemingly
insurmountable task. I took two aspirin and called Dr. Brogdon.
Without hesitation he said quietly, "Get Ted Keats."
We met in Dr. Keats' office at the University of Virginia
Medical Center and instantly discovered that we had a lot in
common. His vision of what
Applied Radiology
should represent to the radiologist in daily practice paralleled my
goals for a practical, usable journal.
Thus began a twelve-year adventure. Under Dr. Keats' ample
leadership, and with the help of a dedicated and supportive
editorial advisory board,
Applied Radiology
regained the reputation of being one of the best-read
nonsubscription journals. For this we are forever grateful.
With this issue, we say good-bye to Dr. Keats as he moves on to
pursue his many artistic interests in retirement.
He leaves the journal editorially sound and eminently better off
for his stewardship. Many years ago, I was told that true
leadership is the ability to replace yourself, to seek and find new
talents, and to pass the mantle knowing it will be in good
hands.
Dr. Keats has done just that. And so, in bidding farewell to a
dear friend, we say hello to a new one. Stuart E. Mirvis, MD
(Professor of Radiology, University of Maryland Medical Center)
will, effective as of our July issue, succeed Dr. Keats as
Editor-in-Chief. We welcome him and eagerly await the next
adventure.
