Amersham Health, Inc., remains committed to its support of
continuing medical education opportunities in the cardiology
community. 2001 marks the fifth year of the Amersham Health
Cardiology Fellows Reporter Program and the third year of the
program's association with the highly respected Society for Cardiac
Angiography and Interventions (SCA&I). This year the Amersham
Health educational grant funded the attendance of seven
interventional cardiology fellows to the annual SCA&I session,
where these fellows were given the opportunity to learn about new
diagnostic and therapeutic options in their field. The fellows were
then asked to research a topic of critical interest to them and,
with the support of their mentors, to report their findings in the
practical review articles that appear in this special issue of
Applications in Imaging--Cardiac Interventions
.
In addition to reviewing them for scientific accuracy, this
year, for the first time, three editorial advisors reviewed the
papers for originality, creativity, and writing style. Amersham
Health is pleased to award an educational grant of $2,000 to the
candidate whose paper the reviewers believed best met the review
criteria and an educational grant of $500 to the candidate they
chose as the first runner-up.
We congratulate Dr. Patricia J.M. Best, Mayo Clinic and Mayo
Foundation, Rochester, MN, on her paper, "Has the surgical era
ended for multivessel coronary artery disease? A treatment update,"
which was judged the best presented. We also congratulate the first
runner-up, Dr. Raj H. Chandwaney, Northwestern University Medical
School, Chicago, IL, for his paper, "Lesion assessment in
percutaneous coronary interventions." We extend our congratulations
to all of the fellows on the excellence of their contributions.
Amersham Health is appreciative of the dedicated efforts of the
members of the review team: Dr. Warren Laskey, University of
Maryland School of Medicine; Dr. Joseph Babb, East Carolina
University School of Medicine; and Dr. Charles Davidson, Cardiac
Catheterization Laboratories, Northwestern University Medical
School. Their support and guidance have helped to make this program
the success that it is.
