Currently, the use of contrast in MR examinations has increased the sensitivity of MR for detecting pathologic processes and characterizing pathologies. In addition, contrast media can be used to depict normal and abnormal vasculature or flow-related abnormalities and pathophysiologic processes. Tissue-specific contrast agents still in development may have a significant impact on the imaging evaluation of various pathologies. This article discusses a variety of MR contrast agents—in clinical use and in development—and reviews their current and potential applications.
