The exquisite tissue contrast of traditional MRI coupled with the enhancement provided by novel probes is a particularly appealing combination to highlight molecular events in normal and disease states. This review focuses on the factors necessary for successful molecular MRI probe development and will highlight some of the applications that are promising for use in clinical practice.
