For the few who reach the hospital, rapid diagnosis and treatment is essential in order to prevent aortic rupture. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of TAI is difficult, as clinical signs and plain radiography are poor screening methods. Helical computed tomographic angiography (CTA) has vastly improved the evaluation of TAI, and its frequent use as a screening tool has led to a reduction in the number of aortograms. This paper will provide an overview of traumatic aortic injury and the role of CTA in its diagnosis.
