By querying tissue at the microscopic scale, DTI provides researchers and clinicians with new biological information not previously available with conventional magnetic resonance imaging. Basic concepts of water diffusion and DTI are reviewed in this manuscript, followed by a brief review of topic areas of ongoing clinical research and developing clinical applications, including brain development, brain injury, white matter diseases, epilepsy, neuropsychiatric diseases, and brain tumors.
