Fujifilm’s Aspire to be Fearless Campaign Brings 3D Mammography to Women Across the Country
November 10, 2020 · McKenna Bryant

In collaboration with clinician partners, FUJIFILM Medical Systems U.S.A. Inc. will offer 3D mammograms at no cost to underserved women through its “Aspire to Be Fearless” Campaign, featuring a mobile coach equipped with the ASPIRE Cristalle with 3D.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and mammography is the only screening method proven to be effective for detecting it.
Women aged 40 and over are encouraged to undergo mammogram screening regularly — yet many are fearful of the pain and cost associated with these potentially life-saving examinations.
That’s why Fujifilm’s “Aspire to Be Fearless” Campaign is bringing free advanced Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) screening to communities across the United States. The campaign will offer high-quality breast screening at no charge so women from all walks of life can fearlessly take charge of their breast health.

DBT is an advanced form of mammography that uses multiple X-rays from many angles to create a three-dimensional (3D) picture of the breast. It allows clinicians to differentiate between layers and reduces obstruction of overlapping layers, which can improve detection sensitivity and reduce false positive callbacks. Research indicates it could make breast cancers easier to see in dense breast tissue and could detect cancer early, when it is most treatable.
“As with all things within radiology, radiation dose can be a huge concern, and this is something that we’ve spent a lot of time trying to resolve on the ASPIRE Cristalle. Our detector is unique, offering the world’s best resolution at 50 microns, and this is all made possible through a hexagonal close pattern design,” said Susan Crennan, Women’s Health Product Marketing Manager, FUJIFILM Medical Systems U.S.A., Inc. “ This unique approach increases dose efficiency by 20%, and it gives doctors and technologists the control they need over patient dose within the screening exam.”
This advanced DBT mammography system features an X-ray tube that moves through an arc around the breast, acquiring a series of low-dose image slices at different angles and producing a 3D view for the radiologist with less obstruction.
The images are reconstructed into a series of high-resolution, slices displayed individually or dynamically in cine mode, making it easier to identify lesions that might be difficult to see with traditional 2D mammography due to overlapping breast tissue.
The unique Hexagonal Close Pattern (HCP) detector pixel design on ASPIRE Cristalle outperforms traditional pixel arrays to help give radiologists superior diagnostic accuracy. Compared to square pixels, HCP delivers:
- 20% higher detector sensitivity
- Improved information capture
- Lower patient dose

This unique imaging technology provides clear images to help radiologists detect breast cancer as early as possible, especially in women with dense breast tissue, who are at higher-than-average risk for cancer and more difficult to screen with traditional 2D mammography.
Nicki Bryan, National Director of Women’s Health Sales at FUJIFILM Medical Systems, U.S.A., said ASPIRE Cristalle with DBT can help clinicians image and see abnormalities like calcifications at very early stages.
“Image quality is critical to detecting cancer at the earliest stages. Because of the algorithms that we’re using and because of the advancements that we’ve made in the detector technology, specifically the hexagonal pixel design, the images are very clear and the clarity is exceptional,” Bryan said. “The life-altering benefit is the image quality and the ability to diagnose potential cancers very early using DBT.”
