Alimentiv Inc., a global GI clinical research organization, and the International Bowel Ultrasound Group (IBUS) have announced the launch of the IUS Standardized Training and Acquisition for Research (IUS-STAR) Certificate. This certification program aims to provide structured training for sonographers, radiologists, and technologists specializing in intestinal ultrasound (IUS).
The IUS-STAR program combines online learning with hands-on training in image acquisition and iterative reviews. This approach allows operators to receive focused feedback and gain proficiency in protocol-compliant imaging, which is essential for clinical trial success. The initiative is designed to speed up site readiness and expand the availability of qualified operators globally.
Stephanie Gonzalez, Chief Operations Officer at Alimentiv, stated, "IUS-STAR reflects what this partnership does best: pairing IBUS scientific leadership with our global operational infrastructure, including Notō Case Manager technology for image review and quality oversight. For sponsors, that translates directly into faster site set-up and a growing pool of IUS-ready sites for IBD trials."
Since their partnership began in 2022, Alimentiv and IBUS have successfully integrated leading IUS expertise into clinical trials across 34 countries. Their work has emphasized the standardization and implementation of IUS as a noninvasive imaging technique in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research.
Kerri Novak, President of IBUS, remarked on the significance of IUS in clinical trials: "The use of intestinal ultrasound—a repeatable, well tolerated tool to comprehensively evaluate the bowel in clinical trials—is a significant advancement. It has the potential not only to improve the identification of patients with active disease, but also to make it more accessible and easier for patients to participate in clinical trials."
Through the IUS-STAR program, participants can engage in case reviews with experts and obtain certification, enhancing their capabilities in ultrasound imaging. This initiative aims to ensure high-quality data collection in clinical research settings.
As demand for noninvasive monitoring of gastrointestinal diseases rises, Alimentiv and IBUS continue to focus on advancing education and standardization in IUS, supporting researchers, study sites, sponsors, and patients.
