Suhny Abbara Named Next Editor-in-Chief of Radiology Journal
The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) has named Suhny Abbara, M.D., FACR, MSCCT, FNASCI as the next editor of its flagship journal, Radiology. He will assume the role in January 2026, succeeding current leadership after an extensive international search.
Tina Young Poussaint, M.D., RSNA Board liaison for publications, expressed confidence in Dr. Abbara's ability to lead the journal. "Dr. Abbara is a recognized radiology leader who brings a distinguished record of scholarship, editorial experience, and commitment to advancing excellence. In this new role, he will guide the journal’s strategic vision, uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity, and foster innovative contributions that shape the future of radiology."
As editor-in-chief, Dr. Abbara will oversee all aspects of the journal's editorial direction, including manuscript review processes, scientific standards, publication timelines, and policy formation. He will also be responsible for the full suite of RSNA journals.

Radiology, first published in 1923, is a premier peer-reviewed journal in medical imaging, featuring cutting-edge clinical research, authoritative reviews, and experimental studies. It holds an impact factor of 15.2, making it the most cited journal in the field.
Dr. Abbara currently serves as chair of the Cardiothoracic Imaging Division at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Previously, he was a tenured professor and division chief at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he also founded a 3D imaging lab and chaired the CT Operations Committee.
Since 2019, he has served as editor of Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging, an RSNA journal focused on research and innovations in cardiothoracic imaging. His clinical and research interests include cardiac CT and MRI, lung cancer screening, imaging biomarkers, coronary calcium scoring, and advanced imaging technologies such as photon counting CT.
A graduate of Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Dr. Abbara completed training in vascular surgery and radiology at institutions in Germany, Washington, D.C., Hawaii, and Boston. He completed a cardiac imaging fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School.
During his decade at Harvard, he led educational and clinical cardiac imaging programs, serving in roles such as director of education, clinical division head, and fellowship director. He has also served on the editorial boards of leading imaging journals and as associate editor for multiple publications.
Dr. Abbara is widely published, with over 300 peer-reviewed articles, numerous textbooks, clinical guidelines, and extensive experience as a reviewer across 25 scientific journals. His accolades include multiple RSNA Honored Educator Awards, a Gold Medal from the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and recognition from Castle Connolly as one of America's Top Doctors.
A long-standing RSNA member, Dr. Abbara has contributed in multiple leadership roles, including chairing the Cardiac Track for the Refresher Course Committee and serving on various RSNA scientific and educational committees. He is also actively involved with numerous professional societies, including ACR, NASCI, SCCT, and the American Heart Association, and holds fellow status in ACR, NASCI, and SCCT.
