Advanced Intraoperative MRI Enhances Neurosurgical Precision at UChicago Medicine
March 10, 2026 · News Release

The University of Chicago Medicine has implemented a state-of-the-art intraoperative MRI (iMRI) system, making it one of only 12 hospitals in the United States that use this cutting-edge technology for neurosurgery. This addition is set to revolutionize the approach to complex neurosurgical procedures.
The iMRI enables real-time functional MRI scans during operations, providing surgeons with the ability to identify potential complications in just seven seconds. According to Dr. Peter Warnke, Director of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, this technology allows clinicians to tailor treatments not just to visible lesions but also to the underlying disease biology, based on a patient's metabolic profiles and brain networks.
Historically, complex neurosurgeries required patients to be transported mid-procedure to another floor for imaging, which added risk and extended procedure times. The new iMRI suite is strategically located between two operating rooms at the Center for Care and Discovery, significantly reducing surgery durations by one to two hours. This enhancement not only augments safety and efficiency but also contributes to quicker patient recovery.
Dr. Mohamad Bydon, Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery, emphasized that the iMRI is a transformative tool, primarily applied in cases involving brain tumors, epilepsy, vascular brain diseases, and complex spinal conditions. "Intraoperative MRI is pivotal in the surgical treatment of complex neurosurgical disease," stated Dr. Bydon. He noted the system's advanced features, which enhance its safety, efficiency, and effectiveness.
This investment bolsters UChicago Medicine's capability to deliver first-rate brain, spine, epilepsy, and vascular surgeries, attracting patients both nationally and internationally. Dr. Jeffrey B. Matthews, Surgeon-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Surgery, described the iMRI's implementation as the result of extensive planning, underscoring the institution's commitment to advancing clinical care through technological innovation.
UChicago Medicine remains dedicated to providing comprehensive neurosurgical care, employing the latest in neuromedical technologies to treat a wide spectrum of neurological conditions. With the integration of the iMRI system, the institution continues to solidify its role as a leader in advanced medical treatments and patient care.
