AI's Role in Transforming Healthcare: A Look at Philips Future Health Index 2026
June 9, 2026 · News Release

The Philips Future Health Index 2026, the latest iteration of the extensive global survey, delves into how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping healthcare systems worldwide. This report, derived from the insights of over 2,000 healthcare professionals and 20,000 patients across ten countries, highlights significant findings on AI's role in healthcare.
The survey uncovered that AI is already contributing substantially to healthcare efficiency by saving clinicians the equivalent of more than 16 workdays annually. As a result, nearly half of the respondents indicated an increase in their capacity to see additional patients weekly. AI's influence extends beyond mere operational efficiency; it is reshaping clinical practice by allowing clinicians to dedicate more time to higher-value tasks and strengthening patient relationships.
Further insights revealed that AI is actively helping healthcare professionals by automating routine tasks and reducing the cognitive and emotional burden of their roles. This technological assistance has resulted in almost half of the clinicians experiencing lower work-related stress and two-thirds gaining confidence in their clinical decision-making. Importantly, 39% of clinicians reported that AI had identified or thwarted potential medical errors multiple times within the past three months, highlighting AI's role in enhancing clinical safety.
Despite these advancements, the report identifies significant hurdles in AI integration. Many health systems are still grappling with inconsistent AI training and fragmented infrastructure, impeding widespread adoption. Specifically, 70% of clinicians cited insufficient training as a barrier to effective AI implementation, emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive training in assessing AI recommendations and navigating technical intricacies.
Clinicians are optimistic about their evolving roles; 82% expect to shift towards higher-value responsibilities facilitated by AI. Simultaneously, patients are increasingly informed about AI, with a substantial number arriving at consultations prepared to engage as active partners in their healthcare. A majority of clinicians acknowledged that informed patients are integral to the future of healthcare.
As the healthcare sector evolves, the transformative potential of AI will largely depend on overcoming integration challenges. Expanding access to adequate training and securing organizational support will be vital for realizing AI's full potential. This future promises enhanced patient care and streamlined clinical workflows, poised to redefine healthcare delivery systems globally.
