Bracco Imaging’s BR55 Granted FDA Fast Track Designation
February 9, 2026 · News Release
Bracco Imaging has announced that its novel ultrasound contrast agent, BR55, has secured Fast Track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This development holds promise for enhancing the detection of active bowel inflammation in patients diagnosed with Crohn's disease.
BR55, composed of perfluorobutane/nitrogen lipopeptide-coated microbubbles, is specifically engineered to target the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2). This receptor is prevalent in areas of angiogenesis, indicating regions with elevated inflammatory activity. The contrast agent improves ultrasound imaging by amplifying signals in such regions, thereby aiding in more accurate disease assessment.
Following successful Phase 2 trials, BR55 demonstrated over 95% accuracy in identifying VEGFR2 expression not only in breast, ovarian, and thyroid cancers but also in intestinal segments exhibiting active inflammation from Crohn’s disease. These results prompted the FDA to expedite its review process.
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract, marked by a cyclic relationship between angiogenesis and inflammation. Enhanced blood vessel formation can exacerbate inflammatory symptoms, linking disease severity to the extent of neovascularization. Persistent inflammation, even when asymptomatic, can progress to bowel damage and other complications, underscoring the importance of vigilant monitoring.
Incorporating molecular imaging to detect angiogenesis presents an innovative approach for managing Crohn’s disease. Ultrasound, being widely accessible and noninvasive, offers a compelling option for routine evaluation of inflammatory activity. This method gains significance as new therapeutic drugs and biologics are introduced.
The Fast Track designation aims to facilitate the development and expedite the review of drugs and agents addressing critical medical needs. Alberto Spinazzi, MD, Chief Medical and Regulatory Officer at Bracco Imaging Group, stated, “This designation is a significant step towards making BR55 available to patients more swiftly. It reinforces our commitment to advancing patient management through cutting-edge imaging solutions.”
Bracco Imaging is now preparing for larger-scale Phase 3 studies that will further investigate BR55’s safety and efficacy in mapping both angiogenesis and active inflammation in Crohn's patients. This next phase of research underscores the company's dedication to precision imaging technologies.
Fulvio Renoldi Bracco, CEO of Bracco Imaging Group, emphasized the company's investment in microbubble technology, which shows potential for broader targeted applications across imaging modalities.
For professionals invested in innovative diagnostic tools, BR55 offers a promising advancement in imaging technology, particularly in the context of complex inflammatory diseases like Crohn’s. This development aligns with Bracco Imaging's mission to lead in diagnostic imaging through innovative solutions that address unmet clinical needs.
