FDA Delays Approval of Lantheus' PET Imaging Agent Due to Manufacturing Issues

Lantheus Holdings, Inc., recognized for its contributions to radiopharmaceuticals, recently announced a delay in the FDA approval process for its new imaging agent, LNTH-2501 (Ga 68 edotreotide). This diagnostic tool, designed for PET imaging of somatostatin receptor-positive neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), was anticipated to receive regulatory approval by June 29, 2026. However, the FDA issued a Complete Response Letter (CRL) citing manufacturing problems at a third-party facility as the primary reason for the delay.

The FDA's CRL indicated that approval cannot proceed until these manufacturing issues are resolved. Importantly, the issues do not pertain to the data supporting LNTH-2501, nor do they relate to questions about the safety or efficacy of the product. The concerns are strictly linked to conditions at the third-party manufacturing site responsible for producing the drug product.

Mary Anne Heino, Executive Chairperson and CEO of Lantheus, stated, "We remain confident in LNTH-2501 and are committed to bringing this imaging agent to NETs patients and healthcare providers as soon as possible." She emphasized that the concern is with manufacturing rather than the clinical performance of the agent.

LNTH-2501 is an investigational radioactive diagnostic kit intended for PET imaging of both adult and pediatric patients with somatostatin receptor-positive NETs. It is supplied as a two-vial kit that allows radiopharmacies to prepare the Ga 68 edotreotide injection from gallium eluate produced by an on-site generator. Presently, LNTH-2501 is not approved for sale in the United States.

The company expressed a firm commitment to working with both their manufacturing partner and the FDA to address the identified issues promptly. This collaborative approach aims to overcome the manufacturing challenges and facilitate regulatory approval.

Lantheus Holdings has a long history in the radiopharmaceutical industry, providing solutions that assist in disease management. While this delay impacts their timeline, the company remains focused on delivering innovative diagnostic tools to improve patient outcomes.
