Fujifilm Unveils Helium-Free MRI System at ECR 2026
February 23, 2026 · News Release

Fujifilm Healthcare Europe is set to introduce its groundbreaking ECHELON® ZeroHelium MRI technology, showcased during the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2026 in Vienna. This innovation eliminates the need for liquid helium, a notable advancement in MRI systems.
The ZeroHelium MRI technology, which earned the Good Design Award, operates without the use of liquid helium, traditionally essential for maintaining the superconducting magnets used in MRI. This innovation offers a sustainable alternative by reducing the helium demand from approximately 2,000 liters to none. Transitioning to copper-based cooling systems, it sustains superconductivity at extremely low temperatures, specifically -269°C. Furthermore, its cooling structure is tailored to minimize vibrations, thereby enhancing image quality.
ZeroHelium MRI systems incorporate Deep Learning Technology, improving imaging detail and shortening scan times. This facilitates more efficient image capture, offering radiologists clearer post-procedure reconstructions by reducing imaging artifacts.
The system also features the ECO Mode Plus, allowing for adjustable power consumption via an inverter system. This feature modulates energy use by delivering the precise amount of cooling necessary for the magnet, thus optimizing efficiency. Additionally, artificial intelligence-enhanced sequences further support the system's energy management by effectively reconstructing images from thinned sampling data.
Fujifilm's commitment to innovation and sustainability is further underscored by its approach to eliminating reliance on finite helium resources—a change that not only showcases an engineering feat but also an environmentally thoughtful pathway in the production of MRI technology.
The ZeroHelium showcase at ECR 2026 will highlight many advancements, offering an immersive experience into Fujifilm’s latest contributions to more sustainable health care technologies.
