GE HealthCare Receives FDA Clearance for Deep Learning CT Imaging Solution

GE HealthCare has received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance for True Definition DL, a deep learning–based image reconstruction technology designed to improve computed tomography (CT) image quality and diagnostic performance.

Imaging plays a central role in modern medicine, with more than 80% of health system visits involving an imaging exam. The demand for faster, more precise imaging continues to grow alongside rising rates of chronic disease, including projected increases in cancer and cardiovascular conditions.

True Definition DL uses a dedicated deep neural network to enhance spatial resolution while suppressing artifacts, enabling high-resolution CT imaging without compromising scan speed or dose efficiency. The technology is particularly suited for high-contrast applications such as lung, musculoskeletal, and inner ear imaging, where detecting subtle anatomical details is critical.

The system supports a 1024 matrix for high-resolution display and can perform chest imaging in under one second. It also improves visualization of small structures, including pulmonary nodules, airways, and trabecular bone patterns, helping clinicians make more confident and timely diagnoses.

“Image quality matters in healthcare—because when imaging performance is aligned with the specific diagnostic task, it plays a critical role in improving accuracy, enabling earlier detection, and guiding appropriate patient care,” said Chad Rowland, Executive Director, Global Premium CT and Photon Counting, GE HealthCare.

Clinical users report meaningful benefits. “True Definition DL delivers exceptional spatial resolution for visualizing very small anatomical structures,” said Dr. Stefanie Bitschnau, radiologist at Radiomed, noting its value in assessing small airways, interstitial lung disease, and fine bone structures such as the auditory ossicles.

The new solution expands GE HealthCare’s portfolio of AI-enabled CT technologies, including TrueFidelity DL and True Enhance DL, which aim to improve image quality, reduce noise, and enhance contrast while maintaining workflow efficiency.

By advancing deep learning–based reconstruction, GE HealthCare aims to support faster scans, improved diagnostic confidence, and broader access to high-quality imaging across diverse clinical settings.
