Each year, the industry acknowledges National Radiologic Technology Week, commemorating Wilhelm Roentgen’s groundbreaking discovery of the x-ray on November 8, 1895.
The 2020 theme, "Building on our History - Creating the Future," highlights how historical contributions shape future innovations in radiologic technology. Significant milestones include:
- 1913: William Coolidge invents the heated cathode x-ray tube, facilitating external beam radiotherapy.
- 1914: Marie Curie designs vehicles to transport x-ray equipment to assist in World War I.
- 1941-1945: The US military trains thousands of service members as radiologists to care for the wounded during World War II.
- 1964: Radiation therapy is established as a specialized field.
- 1971: The first CT scan is performed.
- 1977: The first MR image is created.
- 2011: The inaugural clinical 3-D mammography exam takes place in the US.
Radiological technologists play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases through imaging procedures. They utilize advanced technology to enhance patient care. Currently, more than 337,000 registered radiological technologists in the United States specialize in various fields, including breast imaging, computed tomography, cardiac-interventional procedures, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, radiation therapy, and general diagnostic radiology.
In conjunction with the National Radiologic Technology Week celebration, Guerbet has sponsored the distribution of over 140,000 calendars to members of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT). Notably, the ASRT established National Radiologic Technology Week in 1979.
