Jonathan Kruskal and Douglas Katz Receive 2026 ARRS Gold Medals

The American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) has awarded its highest honor, the Gold Medal, to Jonathan B. Kruskal, MB, ChB, PhD, FSAR, FACR, and Douglas S. Katz, MD, FACR, FASER, FSAR, recognizing their sustained and distinguished contributions to radiology.

The ARRS Gold Medal, the society’s top accolade for more than four decades, honors physicians who demonstrate exceptional service to the practice and science of medical imaging. Kruskal and Katz received the award during the opening ceremony of the 2026 ARRS Annual Meeting at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh.

Kruskal, the Melvin E. Clouse Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and chair at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, is widely recognized for his work in abdominal imaging, quality improvement, and physician well-being. A prolific scholar with more than 250 publications, he has also held numerous leadership roles, including ARRS president (2021–2022) and president of the Society of Abdominal Radiology.

Katz, vice chair for research at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island and professor at NYU Long Island School of Medicine, is a leading figure in emergency and abdominal imaging. He has authored or coauthored more than 1,000 publications and abstracts, contributed to multiple textbooks—including the Atlas of Emergency Imaging from Head-to-Toe (2026)—and earned widespread recognition for his excellence in teaching and peer review, including the AJR Diamond Award and RSNA’s Lifetime Honored Educator Award.

A longtime ARRS member, Katz has played a key role in education and programming within the society, while also serving in leadership positions across major radiology organizations.

Reflecting on his career, Kruskal noted he remains grateful to those who shaped his path, stating he will “forever be indebted to his academic mentors: Ralph Kirsch, Mel Clouse, and Bob Kane.”
