Perimeter Medical Imaging AI, Inc. has announced that Claire™, its AI-enabled imaging device designed for margin assessment during breast-conserving surgery, has garnered several accolades following its FDA approval and first commercial deployment at Intermountain Health.
Claire™ is recognized as the first FDA-approved device of its kind in the U.S., providing real-time assessment of removed breast tissue to help surgeons identify potentially cancerous areas intraoperatively. The technology combines patented wide-field optical coherence tomography imaging with proprietary AI to deliver three-dimensional visualizations, assisting in the identification of suspicious tissue.
Notable recognitions include a special mention in TIME's Best Inventions of 2026, acknowledging the device's innovation in improving surgical outcomes. Additionally, Claire™ received a TAG Award, specifically in the Real-Time Surgical Intelligence category, which honors advancements in surgical decision-making. It also won Gold and Best of Category in the Achievement in HealthTech Innovation category of the Globee® Awards for Innovation.
Further distinctions include selections as a finalist in the Medical Device Innovation category of the 2026 Fierce Life Sciences Innovation Awards and in the Innovation in Healthcare and Biotech category for D CEO's 2027 Innovation Awards. The latter event will announce its winners in January 2027.
Surgeons often face challenges in detecting microscopic cancer cells at the margins of excised tissue during breast-conserving surgery. Studies indicate that approximately 20% of patients undergoing such procedures require additional surgeries due to cancer being found at the margins. Claire™ aims to mitigate this issue by providing immediate insights to assist in surgical decision-making.
Perimeter's CEO, Adrian Mendes, emphasized the significance of these honors, stating, "These honors recognize the work our team and clinical partners have put into bringing real-time, AI-enabled imaging into breast cancer surgery... Our focus is on bringing Claire to more hospitals, so surgeons have additional information to guide critical decisions in real time during the initial procedure."
These acknowledgments come at a pivotal time for Claire™, following its FDA premarket approval and subsequent integration into clinical practice at Intermountain Health, which is the first U.S. health system to utilize the technology.
